You do not need to be a professional artist to enjoy natural body art. With the right product and a simple method, you can create beautiful jagua and henna designs at home, for yourself, your friends or a party.
What you need
Fresh jagua gel or henna paste in an applicator bottle or cone.
A design: a stamp, a stencil or a printed reference.
Clean, dry skin and a few cotton pads.
Medical tape and tissue to protect the design overnight.
Step 1: prepare the skin
Wash the area with soap and water and dry it well. Lotions, oils and sunscreen block the stain.
Step 2: place your outline
This is where most beginners struggle, and where stamps help the most. Ink a reusable stamp, press it firmly onto the skin, and you have a clean, balanced outline in seconds. Stencils and printed references work too, but a stamp is the fastest way to get a professional-looking start.
Step 3: trace and fill
Squeeze gentle, even pressure on the bottle or cone and trace over the outline. Then fill the areas you want solid. Keep lines slightly raised rather than pressing the tip into the skin.
Step 4: let it set
Jagua gel needs about one to two hours to dry before you rinse it off with water. Henna paste can stay on for several hours. Do not touch the design while it is wet.
Step 5: wait for the color
Jagua looks pale at first and darkens to blue-black within 24 to 48 hours. Henna starts orange and deepens to red-brown. Protect the design the first night so it does not transfer onto sheets or other skin.
Beginner tips
Always do a patch test before your first full design.
Start small: a wrist, ankle or forearm design is easier than a full sleeve.
Practice the pressure on paper before working on skin.
Never use black henna or products that promise instant black.
