Can a Jagua or Henna Tattoo Become Permanent?
Is jagua permanent? No. Here's why jagua and henna fade on their own, how long they last, and what to do if a "temporary" tattoo won't fade.

Jagua looks so much like real ink that many first-timers ask the same thing: is jagua permanent? The short answer is no. Natural jagua and henna both fade away on their own, which is exactly why people love them for trying out a design.
Why jagua and henna can't stay forever
Real tattoos place ink deep in the skin with needles. Jagua and henna never go that deep. They stain only the outermost layer of skin, and your body sheds and replaces those cells all the time. As the stained cells flake away, the design fades with them.
Jagua: blue-black, usually lasts up to about 2 weeks.
Henna: warm rust to brown, usually lasts about 10 days.
Hands and feet often fade faster because they're washed and rubbed more.
When a "temporary" tattoo doesn't fade
If someone says their temporary tattoo left a mark that lasted for months, the culprit is usually not natural jagua or henna. Products sold as "black henna" may contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that isn't allowed in skin cosmetics in the US. PPD can cause blistering reactions that sometimes leave scars or lighter or darker patches of skin. That's not the stain lasting; it's skin damage. If you've had a reaction like this, see a doctor.
How to keep your design looking its best
Since your design will fade naturally, a little care helps it look sharp for longer. Avoid scrubbing, chlorine and oily lotions over the area, and pat dry after showers. For a deeper look at timing, read our realistic timeline post on how long jagua lasts.
The perfect way to test-drive a tattoo
Because it fades, jagua is a great way to live with a design before committing to the real thing. You can try a placement, see how you feel about it, and change your mind with zero regret.
