Is Black Henna Safe? The Truth About PPD
Is black henna safe? Most "black henna" contains PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause blisters and scars. How to spot it and safer options.
HENNA

You see it at beach stalls, fairs and tourist markets: "black henna" that turns jet black in minutes. It looks like a great shortcut to a dark tattoo. Unfortunately, it is one of the few body art products health authorities actively warn against.
Real henna is never black
Natural henna comes from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. On skin it stains orange at first, then deepens to a reddish brown over a day or two. It cannot produce a true black. When a product is sold as "black henna", something else has been added to change the color.
What is in black henna?
Most often the additive is PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a chemical used in dark hair dyes. Hair dye is designed to sit on hair, not to stay on bare skin for hours. The U.S. FDA notes that PPD is not allowed in cosmetics intended for the skin, and it has received reports of serious reactions to black henna temporary tattoos.
What can happen
Itching, redness and swelling that appear days after the tattoo.
Blisters and raised, weeping lesions in the exact shape of the design.
Lasting light or dark marks on the skin, and in some cases permanent scarring.
Lifelong sensitization: after one reaction, some people react to hair dyes and other products for the rest of their lives.
How to spot black henna
It is sold as "black henna", "jet black" or "instant".
The paste is black in the tube and the stain is black within an hour.
It smells of chemicals, gasoline or ammonia instead of earthy plant matter.
The artist cannot tell you what is in it or show an ingredient list.
The safer way to get a dark tattoo
If you want a black look, choose jagua instead. Jagua is made from the Genipa americana fruit and naturally develops a blue-black color over 24 to 48 hours, without PPD. As with any product on skin, do a small patch test first, and always ask what is in the gel. At Tattoo-Me we have used plant-based, PPD-free jagua and henna for more than 20 years.
If you ever react to a temporary tattoo, wash the area, avoid scratching, and see a healthcare professional promptly.
