Natural henna paste and jagua gel are fresh plant products, so they don't last forever on the shelf. If you've ever wondered how to store henna paste or why your jagua stain came out weak, storage is often the answer. Here's how to keep both at their best.

The freezer is your best friend

Freezing slows down the natural breakdown that weakens your stain. One established jagua supplier recommends keeping the gel frozen at around -4°F (-20°C), and says well-sealed frozen gel can keep its quality for up to two years. Fresh natural henna paste also freezes well, though most artists aim to use it within a few months for the best color.

  • Squeeze out extra air and seal tightly.

  • Freeze in small portions or cones so you only thaw what you need.

  • Label each portion with the date you made or opened it.

  • Keep it in the back of the freezer, away from the door.

Fridge and room temperature

Once thawed, use your paste or gel soon. A small amount can usually sit in the fridge for a short time; check your supplier's guidance, since some jagua gels are rated for weeks to a few months in the fridge. Natural henna paste left at room temperature loses strength quickly, often within a day or two.

Thawing the right way

Let small tubes or cones thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Don't microwave them or set them in hot water, which can damage the dye. Repeated thawing and refreezing isn't ideal, so portioning ahead really helps.

Signs your paste has lost its power

  • The stain stays pale even after 48 hours.

  • Henna paste has turned dark brown and stiff.

  • There's an off smell, mold or separation that won't mix back in.

When in doubt, toss it and start fresh. A faded batch isn't worth a disappointing design.
