HENNA

Not everything sold as henna is henna. Some products contain chemical dyes that can harm your skin, and they can look convincing on a market stall. Here is how to tell the difference before anything touches your skin.

What real henna looks like

  • Paste color: green to greenish-brown, like crushed leaves.

  • Smell: earthy, plant-like, sometimes with a light essential-oil scent.

  • Stain: bright orange when the paste comes off, deepening to red-brown over 24 to 48 hours.

  • Time: it needs to stay on the skin for hours, not minutes, to stain well.

7 warning signs of fake or chemical henna

  • It is called "black henna", "jet black" or "instant".

  • The paste is black, dark brown or brightly colored in the tube.

  • It stains dark within minutes or within the first hour.

  • It smells of chemicals, ammonia, gasoline or hair dye.

  • There is no ingredient list, or the list includes PPD or para-phenylenediamine.

  • It is mass-market cone henna with a long shelf life at room temperature.

  • The seller cannot tell you where it comes from or what is in it.

Why it matters

The most common additive, PPD, is a hair-dye chemical. On skin it can cause itching, blistering, scarring and a lifelong allergy to hair dyes. The U.S. FDA lists henna as approved only as a hair dye and warns about reactions to black henna temporary tattoos.

Safer choices

Choose fresh, body-art-quality henna from a source that lists its ingredients, and keep it frozen until use. If you want a dark, ink-like look, choose natural jagua, which develops a blue-black color without PPD. Patch test any new product first.

At Tattoo-Me we have worked with plant-based, PPD-free jagua and henna for more than 20 years. Book a session or shop our stamps to start safely.
