How to make henna darker and get a deeper jagua stain: 9 simple, proven tips for application, aftercare and placement.

A pale stain is the most common disappointment with natural body art. The good news: most of what makes a stain dark is in your hands. These tips work for henna, and most of them for jagua too.

Before application

  • Start with clean, dry skin. Wash off lotions, sunscreen and oils so the stain can reach the skin.

  • Use fresh product. Henna paste and jagua gel lose strength over time; store them frozen until use.

  • Choose the right spot. Hands, fingers and feet take the darkest stain; the upper arm and back stain lighter but last longer.

During application

  • Leave henna paste on as long as you can: several hours, ideally 4 to 8 or overnight, wrapped to protect your sheets.

  • Keep the area warm. Body heat helps the stain develop, so stay warm while the paste is on.

  • For henna, dab a light lemon-and-sugar mix on the dry paste to keep it stuck to the skin. Jagua does not need this.

  • For jagua, let the gel dry completely, about one to two hours, before rinsing it off with water. Leaving it on longer will not make it darker.

After removal

  • Scrape henna off rather than washing it, and keep the area away from water for 12 to 24 hours.

  • Be patient. Henna starts orange and jagua starts pale; both reach full color in 24 to 48 hours.

What not to do

Never use "black henna" or products that promise an instant dark result. These often contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause serious skin reactions. Natural color always takes a day or two to develop.
