HENNA

Natural henna usually lasts one to three weeks on the skin. Exactly how long depends on where it is applied, how long the paste stays on, and how you treat the skin afterwards. Here is the full life of a henna stain.
When the paste comes off: bright orange
When you first scrape off dried henna paste, the stain is bright orange. Many people panic at this stage, but this is exactly what natural henna should look like. A stain that is already black is a warning sign of chemical additives.
24 to 48 hours: the stain deepens
Over the next one to two days the color oxidizes and deepens to a rich red-brown or burgundy. This is the peak color of your design.
Week 1 to week 3: the slow fade
Henna stains only the outer layer of skin. As that layer naturally renews, the design fades gradually. On palms and soles, where the skin is thickest, the stain is darkest and can last two to three weeks. On arms, back or chest it is lighter and fades sooner, often within one to two weeks.
What affects how long henna lasts
Paste time: leaving the paste on for several hours (many artists recommend 4 to 8, or overnight) gives a deeper stain.
Placement: hands and feet stain darkest; thinner skin stains lighter.
Water: avoid washing the area for the first 12 to 24 hours.
Exfoliation and chlorine: scrubs, swimming pools and hot tubs speed up fading.
Quality: fresh, body-art-quality henna stains better than old or mass-market paste.
Henna or jagua?
Henna gives a warm rust-to-brown tone and lasts about as long as jagua. Jagua develops a blue-black that looks more like real ink. Many clients choose henna for traditional and bridal designs, and jagua when they want the look of a real tattoo.
