How Long Does a Jagua Tattoo Last? A Realistic Timeline

How long does a jagua tattoo last? Usually 1 to 2 weeks, sometimes up to 3. Here is the day-by-day timeline and what makes yours last longer.

JAGUA

It is the first question almost everyone asks before their first session: how long will it actually stay? The honest answer is that a jagua tattoo usually lasts one to two weeks, and up to three weeks on the right part of the body with good care. Here is what to expect, day by day, and why two people with the same design can get different results.

Day 0: the gel goes on

Jagua gel is made from the juice of the Genipa americana fruit. When it is applied, the design looks almost invisible or very pale. That is normal. The gel stays on the skin for about one to two hours until it is fully dry, then it is rinsed off with plain water. At this point you will see only a faint blue-grey outline.

Days 1–2: the color develops

This is where jagua surprises people. Over the next 24 to 48 hours the stain slowly oxidizes and darkens into a deep blue-black that looks remarkably like real ink. Do not judge your tattoo on day one: the real color shows up on day two.

Days 3–10: peak color

For most of the first week to ten days, your design sits at its darkest and sharpest. This is the window when it looks most like a permanent tattoo.

Days 10–21: the fade

Jagua only stains the top layer of the skin. As your skin naturally renews itself, the stained cells shed and the design fades evenly, without peeling or flaking like a sticker. On hands and feet this happens faster; on the upper arm, back or calf it can last closer to three weeks.

What makes a jagua tattoo last longer

  • Placement: areas with less friction and fewer washes (shoulder, upper arm, back, calf) hold color longer than hands, fingers and feet.

  • Water and soap: long hot showers, saunas, hot tubs and chlorinated pools speed up fading.

  • Exfoliation: scrubs, loofahs and exfoliating acids remove the stained cells faster.

  • Moisture: well-hydrated skin sheds more slowly, so a simple natural oil or balm helps.

  • Your skin: everyone's skin renews at its own pace, so results vary from person to person.

The bottom line

Plan for about one to two weeks of strong color, with a gentle fade after that. If you have a wedding, a shoot or a vacation coming up, book your jagua session two days before the event so the color is at its darkest on the day.
