Can You Get Henna or Jagua While Pregnant?

Thinking about henna during pregnancy? What to know about natural henna and jagua, why to check with your doctor first, and what to avoid.

HENNAJAGUA

Belly henna has been part of pregnancy celebrations in many cultures for generations, and more expecting parents are asking us about it for baby showers and maternity photos. If you're wondering about henna during pregnancy, here's what we tell every client: the decision belongs to you and your doctor, and the ingredients matter a lot.

Talk to your doctor or midwife first

We're body artists, not medical professionals, so we can't tell you whether henna or jagua is right for your pregnancy. Skin can become more sensitive during pregnancy, and your care provider knows your health history. Bring the ingredient list with you so they can give you a clear answer.

Why ingredients matter more than ever

Pure henna is made from the dried leaves of Lawsonia inermis mixed with liquid, sugar and a skin-safe essential oil. Jagua comes from the fruit of Genipa americana. The real danger is so-called "black henna," which is often darkened with PPD, a hair-dye chemical that is not allowed in cosmetics meant for skin in the US. Avoid any paste that promises jet-black color in an hour.

Also ask about the essential oils in the paste. Some blends use oils that people prefer to skip during pregnancy, and a good artist can tell you exactly what is in their mix.

Smart steps if your doctor gives the OK

  • Ask your artist for a full ingredient list before booking.

  • Do a small patch test 24 to 48 hours ahead.

  • Choose a comfortable position and take breaks during longer sessions.

  • Skip any area with irritated, broken or itchy skin.

  • Stop and wash the paste off if you feel burning or itching.

Not ready yet? You still have options

If you'd rather wait, you can plan a design now and save it for after the baby arrives, or simply enjoy the art on a partner or friend at your shower.
