Most people enjoy natural henna and jagua without any trouble, but any plant ingredient can cause a reaction in someone. A simple henna allergy patch test takes a few minutes to set up and gives you peace of mind before a big design, a wedding or an event.
Why patch testing is worth it
Reactions can come from the plant itself, the essential oils in the paste, or other added ingredients. Products sold as "black henna" are a common culprit in serious reactions, because they can contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that isn't allowed in skin cosmetics. A patch test helps you spot a problem on a tiny area instead of across your whole hand.
How to do a patch test step by step
Pick a small spot on your inner forearm or behind your ear.
Apply a dot or short line of paste or gel, about the size of a fingertip.
Leave it on for the same time you would for a full design.
Remove it as directed and leave the spot uncovered.
Check the area over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Use the exact product you plan to wear. If you switch brands or batches, test again.
What's normal and what's not
A normal result is simply a stain: orange-brown for henna or blue-black for jagua, with no discomfort. Warning signs include redness that spreads beyond the dot, itching, swelling, bumps or blisters. If you notice any of these, don't go ahead with a full design, and contact a doctor if the reaction is strong or doesn't settle.
Tips for people with sensitive skin
Ask your artist for the full ingredient list, including essential oils. Avoid applying paste to broken, sunburned or irritated skin, and give yourself extra time before an event in case you need to re-test or change plans.
