Temporary body art is a favorite at birthday parties, school fairs and summer camps. As parents, it is natural to ask what is going on your child's skin. Here is what to know before saying yes.
Never use black henna on children
This is the most important rule. "Black henna" often contains PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause blistering, scarring and a lifelong allergy. Children are among those who have been seriously affected. If a stall offers jet-black designs that dry in minutes, walk away.
Natural henna: mostly well tolerated, with one exception
Pure, natural henna is generally well tolerated on skin. However, it is not recommended for babies and very young children, and children with G6PD deficiency (an inherited enzyme condition) should avoid it, because the active compound in henna can cause problems for them. If you are unsure, ask your pediatrician first.
Jagua: natural, but still test first
Jagua is made from a tropical fruit and contains no PPD. Like any product applied to skin, it can occasionally cause irritation, so a small patch test 24 to 48 hours before a full design is a smart habit, especially for children with sensitive skin or allergies.
A quick checklist for parents
Ask the artist what is in the product, and avoid anything sold as "black" or "instant".
Do a small patch test before the event.
Keep designs away from the face, eyes, mouth and broken skin.
Choose small designs on the arm, hand or ankle for young children.
Remind kids not to touch the design until it is dry, and protect sheets and clothes the first night.
Make it easy at home
Reusable stamps are a great way for kids to choose a design and get a clean outline without a long sitting. An adult applies the gel; the child picks the stamp.
Planning a party? Our artists bring PPD-free jagua and henna to events, or you can stamp at home with our Zodiac and Animals packs.
